Salamanca-based production company Jabuba Films continues filming the documentary 'A Matter of Charros'
Filming will take place in towns in the province of Salamanca such as Tamames, Mogarraz, or Ciudad Rodrigo, and will continue in Mexico
Salamanca-based production company Jabuba Films resumes filming the documentary “A Matter of Charros,” which seeks to shed light on charros and charrería on both sides of the Atlantic.
The documentary stems from the original idea of its promoter and screenwriter, Colombian academic Juan Daniel Elorza-Saravia. In early February, the Salamanca production company already began the first phase of production in the province of Salamanca and has filmed in places such as Mogarraz, the workshop of dressmaker Feli Cañada (Salamanca), the jewelry workshop of Luís Méndez (Tamames), and Ciudad Rodrigo. After filming in Salamanca lands, the documentary will continue in Mexico.
The work addresses the relationship and influences of the Salmantine charro on the charro of Mexico and vice versa, attempting to shed light on this cultural phenomenon that had never before been studied. The script is based on an ethnographic analysis of the area; it does not focus on the charro “from here or there” but on the links between both traditions. The project has made it possible to articulate various disciplines and characteristics of the charro world whose creators had not found a common stage until now.
“A Matter of Charros” will review the most cherished elements of the charro tradition, both in Mexico and Salamanca: costumes, jewelry, musical expressions, and work with horses, among others. The work aims to become a conscious meeting place for traditions that stood out on both sides of the Atlantic, and which, despite being closely linked from their equestrian origin, have mutually ignored each other.
Filming will extend throughout 2015 between Salamanca and Mexico. For the production process, Jabuba Films has had the support of the Salamanca Film Commission.
