Autumn 1504. In her chambers at the Royal Palace of Medina del Campo, as the cold, sad Castilian morning seeps through the window, Isabella the Catholic awakens agitated after a disturbing nightmare. A dreamlike journey of lush jungles and voices in strange tongues has sought to take her beyond the ocean, where the Indies have appeared to her within a labyrinth of mirrors with all their lights and shadows.
The discovery of the New World had not only meant more lands for the Crown's treasury and government, but also a serious conflict of interests and a problem of moral responsibility towards its new subjects. What the queen initially wanted to celebrate as a project of territorial integration, pacification of peoples, and evangelization, would end up becoming a dream of gold, fortune, and slaves for the many tyrannical and greedy Spaniards who arrived there.
Isabella, perfectly aware that she has little time left to live, is determined to face this reality with extraordinary clarity and firm will. She will not leave this world without first having dictated testamentary provisions to her successors to ensure justice, freedom, and human dignity in the future of those 'other children,' the indigenous people.
