La barraca tells the story of the rejection suffered by Batiste Borrull's family when they settle in a shack and on Valencian orchard lands from which another family, who had lived and worked there for several generations, was evicted for non-payment. The local market gardeners, all of them tenants, intend to keep these lands fallow as a symbol of power against their landlords. The conflict will grow in intensity until it turns into tragedy. The story told in La barraca is shocking due to the relevance of its characters and their conflicts.
La barraca speaks of the unjustified rise in rents, evictions, child harassment, and the bitter confrontation between natives and immigrants.
