Elio Antonio de Nebrija Sculpture

14 minutes
Professor at the University of Salamanca and author of the first Castilian grammar.

Audio guide available: his daughter guides us through the Salamanca where a silent revolution was born: the first Castilian Grammar, printed in 1492. Between Libreros street, the printing press, the University and the memory of the Botanic Garden, the narrator interweaves plants and words to show how Nebrija understood that ordering language was also ordering the world. It deals with his relationship with Isabella the Catholic, the political and cultural meaning of Castilian, his curiosity for other sciences and his bond with Cardinal Cisneros, revealing a humanist whose work took universal roots that still endure today, alive.
