The company's origins trace back to 1812, the year D. Gregorio Mirat established a starch factory in Salamanca (Spain); subsequently, various business lines were undertaken. In 1841, his son Juan Casimiro was born, who would be fundamental to the company's development. In 1853, Gregorio brought his son into the business, and some time later, the factory was renamed Mirat e Hijo (Mirat & Son). Juan Casimiro applied the knowledge acquired during his travels in France, and by 1876, he was already exporting products outside the Iberian Peninsula.
It was in that same year, 1876, that the factory's relocation near the Tormes River to the Convent of San Jerónimo is dated. In 1881, rice starch production also began, important for clothes ironing. During that decade, it became one of the first factories in Salamanca to introduce steam as a motive force. During that era, they also had a warehouse near the old bullring; in 1902, Casimiro began building small hotels there, and to this day, that Salamancan avenue bears the name "Avenida de Mirat." In 1933, it was established in its current legal form as a Sociedad Anónima (Public Limited Company), and in 1963, it began the production of complex fertilizers. Its facilities in Salamanca, originating from the 19th century, are the only well-preserved examples of Salamancan industrial architecture.
