Plaza del Corrillo

10 minutes
Plaza del Corrillo is located in the heart of Salamanca. Situated next to the famous Plaza Mayor, it serves as a connection between the main square and other areas of the city's historic center.
Features and History
Connection to Plaza Mayor: Plaza del Corrillo is directly connected to Plaza Mayor through a covered archway, known as the "arco del Corrillo."

"Corrillo de la Hierba": It is said that the square's name, meaning "Small circle" or "Meeting place," originated in the 15th century. During the Factional War, the square was a "no man's land" between the two warring factions, allowing grass to grow freely, which earned it the nickname "Corrillo de la Hierba" (Grass Circle).

Architectural Details: The square is known for its unique architectural features. On one side stands the Romanesque church of San Martín. On the other, a row of houses with porticoed columns.

Roman God Reliefs: A fascinating detail can be found on the columns on the portico side. Their reliefs are decorated with Roman gods, each representing a day of the week. This feature was added in 1954 when the old iron columns were replaced and decorated with these stone carvings.
