The Mothers of '36

The Mothers of '36 is a historical and human novel set in the early months of the Spanish Civil War. The work recounts the lives of several families marked by violence, political divisions, and loss. Its main protagonist, María, represents so many women who saw their husbands, children, siblings, or fathers disappear after an arrest, a denunciation, or a dawn of fear. The novel does not aim to divide victims according to the side they belonged to. On the contrary, it shows the suffering caused by both sides of the conflict and gives true prominence to those who were left waiting: the mothers, wives, and women who had to continue living amidst silence, poverty, and absence. With settings located in Salamanca, in towns in its province, and in the lands of Granada, The Mothers of '36 combines fictional characters with real historical events. It is a story about memory, pain, dignity, and the need to understand that, behind every war, there are mothers waiting for a door that never reopens.
