Theatrical visit to Saint Teresa's House

30 minutes

Saint Teresa lodged in this house. Saint Bonifacia, a saint from Salamanca and founder of the Servants of Saint Joseph, also did. A space that still preserves the aura of these saints.

The house-convent of Saint Teresa (also known as Saint Teresa's house) is a dwelling where Saint Teresa of Jesus resided in Salamanca (in the current Plaza de Santa Teresa).
The house was owned by Commander Juan Antonio Ovalle Prieto and is located near the Church of San Juan de Barbalos. Its construction dates back to the late 15th century. Saint Teresa would live in the city, precisely in this house, for a period of almost four years.

History
After Saint Teresa's journey through various places in Castile, establishing Convents, she entered the city for the first time on October 31, 1570, where she provisionally settled with the aim of initiating what would be her seventh foundation. This was the Convent of San José of the Discalced Carmelites located in the historic center of the city. During her stay in 1573, obeying her director, the Jesuit Ripalda, she wrote the book of her foundations.

In this house-convent, she wrote "Vivo sin vivir en mí" (I live without living in myself). Features: The building's facade is simple, built of plain stone. It has a semicircular arch doorway built with large voussoirs; above this doorway is a window flanked by two original coats of arms. Inside, a courtyard opens up.
