MAGIC AND GOLD AN EXHIBITION ON TRADITIONAL AND DESIGNER JEWELRY IN SALAMANCA AND ITS PROVINCE.

Until 05/19/2024

Magic and Gold emerges as a tribute to José María Velasco, the last representative of a family saga dedicated to jewelry, who, upon retirement, donated the machinery and tools from his workshop to the Museum of Commerce.

A selection of the best goldsmiths from Salamanca and its province have participated in this exhibition:
Joyería Vasconcellos, Méndez Vieira, Rodrigo Álvarez Nicieza,
Ángel Gascón Rosellón, Matusalén Antigüedades, Luis Méndez artisans, Joyería Cordón, Joyería Ángel L. García and Pedro Luis Cruz Iglesias.

Most of the jewelry that can be seen in the exhibition is made using the filigree technique, used in both gold and silver works.

Popular jewelry not only has an ornamental purpose, but also possesses a marked religious, economic, social, etc. significance. with the traditional La Alberca 'traje de vistas' being where this character is best exemplified.

A special mention should be made, when speaking of traditional religious jewelry, of that which accompanies children's clothing and has an eminently prophylactic purpose in a context where infant mortality was so high.
