BAROQUE ALTARPIECE OF THE COLLEGE CHURCH

30 minutes

The main altarpiece of the Church of La Clerecía is one of the most outstanding works of Spanish altarpiece art and the second largest in Salamanca, only surpassed by that of San Esteban. As a whole, it stands out for both its extraordinary artistic value and its profound religious symbolism.

The structure of this altarpiece, a true Baroque masterpiece, was commissioned in 1673 to Juan Fernández, while the reliefs and sculptures were contracted with Juan Rodríguez, a disciple of Gregorio Fernández, and with Juan Peti. The magnificent gilding covering this altarpiece was completed almost a century after the structure itself was finished.

With its 22 meters in height, the ensemble impresses with its monumentality and the careful balance of its composition. The plinth, made of marbles and jaspers, supports six Solomonic columns, decorated with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, which structure the central body into three sections.

In the side sections are the sculptures of the Doctors of the Latin Church, while the central section is presided over by the large tabernacle for the solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Above it is the relief of Pentecost, in keeping with the temple's original dedication to the Holy Spirit.

The attic houses the relief of Saint Ignatius writing the Spiritual Exercises kneeling before the Virgin, flanked by the figures of the Four Evangelists.

The Baroque altarpieces of Salamanca constitute one of the most outstanding artistic collections of the city's religious heritage. Mainly emerging between the 17th and 18th centuries, these large sculptural and architectural ensembles reflect the splendor of the Baroque and the importance of Salamanca as a cultural and religious center at the time. They are characterized by their monumentality, their ornamental richness and the use of noble materials, as well as by the strong symbolic and catechetical charge typical of Counter-Reformation art.

To highlight this heritage, the so-called Baroque Altarpiece Route has been promoted, a cultural itinerary that allows visitors to explore some of the city's main temples and admire their most significant altarpieces. The churches of Vera Cruz, La Purísima, Espíritu Santo (La Clerecía), Santa Clara, San Esteban and Sancti Spíritus are part of the route, as well as the chapels of Cristo de las Batallas (Salamanca Cathedral) and San Jerónimo (University).

One of the most impressive works in the collection is the main altarpiece of the Church of La Clerecía. Considered one of the most monumental altarpieces in Salamanca, only surpassed in size by that of the church of San Esteban; it reaches 22 meters in height and stands out for its great compositional richness. Its structure, based on a powerful play of Solomonic columns and a complex iconographic organization, makes it a key piece for understanding Salmantine Baroque in its maximum expression.

Ultimately, the Baroque Altarpiece Route allows rediscovering the city through its sacred art, and the altarpiece of La Clerecía stands as one of its most emblematic stops, both for its artistic value and for its historical and symbolic importance. The proposal is completed with the installation of information posts in each of these churches, with photographs and a QR code that directs to a website with all the information about each altarpiece.
