SCALA COELI

45 minutes

Scala Coeli (Stairway to Heaven) is the tour of the towers of the Clerecía church, the former Royal College of the Holy Spirit, where the Pontifical University is located today.

The ascent begins in the north tower, via the original wooden staircase that leads to the north gallery of the church, from which the Main Altarpiece can be seen. In this space, portraits of Philip III and Margaret of Austria are exhibited, as well as models and informative panels about the construction of the College.

From there, the staircase ascends in a zigzag pattern, attached to the walls, until it reaches the towers. The walk culminates in a unique experience: the opportunity to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Salamanca from one of its most privileged viewpoints.

At certain times of the year, especially during the summer months, both Ieronimus (Cathedral Towers) and Scala Coeli offer night visits. These allow visitors to discover Salamanca from a new perspective, with the city illuminated.

Exploring Salamanca from above allows you to discover an unseen side of the city. From the Clerecía Towers, squares, streets, and monuments take on new meaning, revealing details and nuances that go unnoticed at street level. It is especially fascinating to observe the patios and cloisters of palaces and convents, many of them hidden from the spectator when visiting the city.

Scala Coeli tour begins in the entrance hall that provides access to the main floor of the Cloister of Studies. A narrow wooden staircase leads to the first stop: the church tribunes. There, through panels and models, visitors can learn about the building's history. From an interior balcony, the imposing main altarpiece of the Clerecía church can be admired in all its splendor.

This space is divided into three rooms. The first, titled The Beginning and the End, displays portraits of Doña Margarita of Austria and Philip III, along with documentation on the founding of the Royal College of the Society of Jesus. The second room is dedicated to the building's construction process, while the third addresses its rebirth after the damages suffered during the 19th-century war conflicts.

The visit continues via the Bell Ringer's Staircase, which leads to the towers. From above, unprecedented panoramic views of the historic city can be enjoyed. In both towers, it is possible to ascend to the bell chamber using a modern spiral staircase.

At certain times of the year, especially during the summer months, both Ieronimus (Cathedral Towers) and Scala Coeli offer night visits. These allow visitors to discover Salamanca from a new perspective, with the city illuminated.
